Laying the foundation: Introduction to the Age of the Anathema series

New beginnings, right? Now that you’ve stumbled into my realm, I intend to fully maximiae the attention you’ve so graceously afforded me and make this time worth your while.

I’m not gonna make the mistake and assume that you already know all about who I am and what I do, so here’s the deal: I’m a multi-genre author who is now focussed on writing gritty epic fantasy stories with dark themes, redemptive plots, and a tone/voice/style that is reminiscent of old-school epics like Lord of the Rings and the Shannara Chronicles.

The main series I’m currently working on is Age of the Anathema, a tale of three boys fighting to survive in a world that would stop at nothing to unalive them simply because of their heritage.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Five bloodlines... three kingdoms... one law...

Long ago, magic pulsed through the very fabric of Eutopia. Now, it is a luxury enjoyed only by the Nobles of Schandrof... and those born from a mix of races.

Known as the Anathemas, these people of mixed heritage are considered unfit for healthy and safe societal fraternisation and are fated to die by the hand of Guardians of Magic.

Their only crime: being born.

An epic tale of love, sacrifice, and man's hostility towards the unknown.

Some of the main themes of this not-entirely-tragic tale include love, loss, dealing with grief, overcoming darkness, finding identity, found family, good vs evil, defeating inner demons, finding home, political machinations and the greater vs the few. Racism, classism, identity.

This series is likely going to span 7 or more books, so buckle up for the ride, cos we’re going to town with this one.

If you haven’t already started the series, you’re breaking my heart!

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but the books are actually really good. Lol really, you should check them out.

But just in case you haven’t, here are some things you might wanna be aware of before diving right in:

  • You’re gonna need some tissues at a point, cos no one is safe. and I mean, NO ONE. Except maybe Sexa (for now), cos my mother threatened to disown me if I unalive him. Ultimately, life is a game with high stakes, and I wanted that to be reflected in this story (including the random and heart-breaking incidents of people casually dropping dexd for no apparent reason).

  • The story is told in third person limited and with multiple points of view. This means you often get a glimpse into the minds of your favourite characters at some point or other.

Okay, so I really debated whether to share this one, but there’s been so much mixed fedback on this that I figured you should probably go in prepared. And that’s Multiple Timelines. Two, to be exact (if you don’t count the prologue).

  • If you love immersive worlds you can get lost in, then this one’s for you, cos the worldbuilding is just EPIC. I’m talking histories, cultures, religions, currencies, lore, politics, war, natural (and unnatural) disasters, ages, eras, magic systems, monsters, fated mates. If you’d like a feel of the world, its lore, mythology and legends, then I highly recommend you start with Goleah’s Lore. This is a fictitious collection of myths, legends and folktales set in the world of Eutopia. It’s literally a book that exists within the books!

Now you have the basic gist of the series, I’d also love to hear from you. What are some of your favourite story tropes, themes, and/or character archetypes?

Till next time, stay blessed!
